REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Joko Widodo and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama are officially inaugurated as Governor and Deputy Governor of Jakarta for 2012-2017, on Monday morning. After taking oath at 10.40 am the local parliamentary building in Kebon Sirih Street, Joko Widodo -popularly known as Jokowi- and his deputy was greeted by the previous governor and his former rival, Fauzi Bowo.
Jokowi and Basuki Tjahaja Purnama or Ahok then met thousands of people who gathered outside the building. The people not only gave them greets and cheers, but also love letters. Yes, those letters contains their expectations to their new leaders.
Jokowi delivered his first speech as Jakarta city governor before the people in a three meter tall podium. The speech lasted only for five minutes and then he approached the edge of the podium to greet the people who kept shouting and calling his name.
Jokowi then knelt and with one ear towards the people, he pretended to listen to the people’s chants. “Yes… yes… thank you,” he said to the sea of people.
Surprisingly, some of the people wrote letters to express their expectations to the new governor and his deputy. Wahyu (45 year) was among three people who had the rare chance to hand the letter personally to Jokowi.
“The letter contains my expectation to Mr Jokowi for the sake of the people. Do not expect us to serve them. Instead, it is their job to serve the people,” she said to Republika. Well, congratulation to Jokowi and Ahok!
