REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) and the first Lady Ani Yudhoyono are scheduled to pay a state visit to the UK upon invitation of the Queen Elizabeth II. During the visit which scheduled from October 31 to November 2, SBY will spend some nights at the Buckingham Palace.
The visit was an opportunity to enhance cooperation, the UK Ambassador to Indonesia Mark Canning said. He said that UK and Indonesia could strengthen cooperation on education, climate changing, economy, and investment. He added that cooperation between both countries were important considering the joint task mandated by the UN.
Besides the good coordination between SBY and British Prime Minister David Cameron, UK and Indonesia also coordinate with Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as the Chairman of High Panel on Post-2015 Development Agenda.
The invitation also shows UK appreciation for Indonesian achievements, particularly Indonesian democratic progress. Indonesia is also considered success on overcoming terrorism.
"Also, the success of a country suffering from a severe economic crisis in 1997-1998 is emerging as one of the countries with the largest economies in the world by becoming a member of the G-20," Canning said.
SBY will be staying at Buckingham Palace. This visit is the first time for Indonesia since 33 years ago on 1979. Queen Elizabeth II has also visited Indonesia on 1974.
