REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - It turns out that most of Indonesian people disfavor to the House of Representatives, according to survey by Lingkar Survey Indonesia (LSI). The survey says that 56.43 percent of 1,200 parents forbid their children to become lawmakers or members of the House.

An LSI researcher, Rully Akbar, announcing the result on Sunday, said that the feeling disfavor is increasing by 25 percent compared to 2008. According to LSI survey in 2008, only 31.32 percent of respondents saw lawmaker as profession with bad reputation for their children. "While, those who were obsessed to become lawmakers were 59.22 percent," Akbar said on Sunday.

Several factors cause public antipathy towards the House due to the fact that many legislators involve in corruption cases. About 69.55 percent of respondents say that becoming the members of the House are not respectable. Only 22.76 percent is still proud to become lawmakers.

People see House members as people who think only about their own group or their own interest. Many members also implicate in adultery, affecting the image of House members. Other inappropriate acts causing negative image are lavish lifestyle, falling asleep during meeting, or even accessing pornographic websites in work time. LSI suggests political party to strictly select candidates for lawmakers based on merit.

Separately, the Speaker of the House, Marzuki Alie, said the reputation of parliament was declining due to the falling political reputation. Many politicians, he admitted, conducted inappropriate behaviors.

"It is not the parliament. It is the politicians that show inappropriate behaviors," he said and urged all member of parliament to improve their behavior with better reputation.
