REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Following the recent flood that paralyzed the capital city, more and more people talk about moving the capital city to other place as Jakarta is considered not an ideal place anymore. Even the governor of Jakarta Joko Widodo welcomes the idea.
"If we cannot cope with flood, Speaker of People's Consultative Assembly and I agree to move the capital city," Jokowi said after meeting the Speaker, Taufiq Kiemas, on Monday.
He emphasized that before moving the capital city, government must put their efforts to overcome flood and traffic jam. "The most important thing is to solve the problem first," he said.
The Minister of Disadvantaged Areas, Helmy Faishal Zaini, also said that Jakarta could no longer accommodate a large number of people and moreover, its infrastructure is also obsolete and lead to traffic jam.
He said that separating administrative from busines capitals was the right choice. "By moving capital city, we can reach equitable growth," he said.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono mentioned three options over the idea. The first option is to keep Jakarta as the administrative capital as well as business center. "It means that we must solve the problems of traffic jam, flood and transportation," Presidential Adviser on Regional Autonomy and Development, Velix Wanggai, said.
Second option is to maintain Jakarta as the capital, but all government offices will be moved to another place to ease the burden of the city. Meanwhile, last alternative is building a new capital in another city.
