SBY refutes suspicion over tax returns

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JEDDAH - Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, said that his family always pay taxes, following the suspicious tax returns report by an English newspaper in Indonesia.

"I am very concerned as I and my family work and obtain some wealth, yet are considered not paying taxes," SBY said during press conference on Monday. Without mentioning the detail, SBY said that he and his family had fulfilled their obligation as required by the laws.

"The process is also accountable. After I fill my obligation, I ask them to check it," he said.

The newspaper reported that based on the tax returns of SBY and his two sons, Agus Harimurti and Edhie Baskoro, there were mismatch between their declared wealth and their annual earnings. Agus Harimurti, who works as an officer with the Strategic Reserce Command (Kostrad), declared on his 2011 tax returns an annual income of 70.2 million IDR. While the tax documents revealed by the newspaper showed that Agus opened four different bank accounts and deposited over 1.6 billion IDR that same year. 

The newspaper also revealed that SBY earned 1.37 billion IDR in 2012 as the President, in addition to 107 billion IDR in income from royalties. The documents further revealed that in 2011 SBY opened bank accounts worth 4.98 billion IDR and 589,188 USD. The return does not provide specific details for these funds. 

SBY claimed that the data revealed by the newspaper was different from the data in Directorate General of Taxation.
