REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo, or  Jokowi, said giant sea wall was a great solution to tackle floods in North Jakarta. He explained that giant sea wall is necessary as Jakarta's land was subsiding.

"West Flood Canal and East Flood Canal are not enough to protect the capital city. We need the giant sea wall to prevent the city drown below sea level," he said on Monday.

Thus, he hopes the construction of the giant sea wall can start soon. The city administration is still discussing the technical aspect.

The construction of the 32-kilometer giant sea wall from Tanjung Burung in Tangerang to Tanjung Priuk in North Jakarta will cost up to 100 trillion IDR. Jokowi claimed that many investors had expressed interests in joining the project, without elaborating them. City administration will cooperate with Ministry of Public Works and National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) to build this project which was initiated by former Governor Fauzi Bowo.

This project includes the building of 17 artificial lands reclaimed from the sea. Government planned to build apartment, hotel and other buildings in those lands, Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, said.

Several large developers in Jakarta have owned some of the lands, while city administration only has five. The land reclamation will be sold using business pattern.

"The developers must give big contribution for Jakarta. I don't want five percent," Purnama said. The contribution can be in the form of the construction of green open space or rehabilitation of public space in Jakarta.
