REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) concerns about political condition towards 2014 General Election. The emerging political dynamics following the announcement of Democratic Party Chairman Anas Urbaningrum as a graft suspect is considered as a severe blow to democracy.
SBY said he always monitored and followed political dynamics towards elite politics and certain community. "Political dynamics are legal as long as it is in democratic corridor. But, if it is beyond that and bother the work of government, I am worried that it will inflict losses to our people," he said on Sunday before leaving for Germany.
He mentioned that the political dynamics started with the announcement of Urbaningrum as a suspect of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on Friday, February 2. He said that it led to the confusion to draw the fine line between law and politics. For the last nine days, he felt that there were many rumours, libels, and strange news.
SBY had not commented on Urbaningrum case and his resignation from Democratic Party. However, Urbaningrum obtained many supports after he was named as a suspect. Several political figures visited his house in East Jakarta in the last two weeks.
Paranoid
Political Experts from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Ari Dwipayana, said SBY statement reflected that he was a paranoid. SBY often said that the country was threatened due to elite tension and political maneuver from the opposition.
"President seems to personalize the threat. He is exaggerating," he said. Dwipayana explained that personalization sometimes became an effective way to immobilize opposition. However, democratic is in danger if such method is used. He said different opinion was usual as long as it did not violate constitution.
