REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -  The House of Representatives is working on drafting legislation that will require all civil servants, laborers, and workers to participate in compulsory military service. The House is drawing up the Draft Law of Reserve Component which contains rules about military service on Article 6, paragraph 3 and Article 8, paragraph 3.

Ministry of Defence and Security Affairs proposes the importance of ratification the law this year and Indonesia will soon implement it. Reserve Component considers it is necessary to contain national and global threats. Advisor of Minister of Defence and Security Affairs, Maj. Gen. Hartind Asrin supports the government's plan. He said, the military service was mandated by the Constitution, hence it must be implemented.

"Military service for civil servants is a form to prevent the war, despite Indonesian security level is still quite stable," Asrin said on Monday.

Indonesia can adopt a system of conscription that applied by Singapore where selected civil servants and civilians must join reserve force or National Service. After attending basic training for a month, they can go back to their respective jobs. The reserve force is only used at any time required.
