Seven international ports in Batam prone of drugs smuggling

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Police Chief of Riau Island, Brig Yotje Mende said seven international ports in Batam prone to drug smuggling. The seven international ports were Sekupang, Batu Ampar, Nusa Terminal Bahari, Batam Center, Marina Water Front, Habour Bay and Telaga Punggur.

"Illegal drug trafficking in Riau Island is quite high. Since a month ago, there were seven international ports in Batam which were prone entry of drugs, included 75 illegal ports," Mende said on Friday.

Sekupang is port which most vulnerable because often passed by Pelni ship. Next port of Batu Ampar because many container transactions there, as well as Batam Center. Example of illegal port is Longsam as adjacent to Singapore and Johor Malaysia.

Local government has now formed an Integrated Task Force for Prevention, Eradication, Abuse and Illegal Drugs (P4GN) in Riau Island. This task force involved the the Provincial National Narcotics Agency (BNNP) and Lamtamal for monitoring and investigation in the sea.
