REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Riots broke out at the Indonesian Consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Sunday night local time. It occured during a process when thousands of Indonesian workers forced to change their status from illegal workers to legal migrant workers.
"All consular staff are in safe condition. We are still examining how many workers that were injured," Indonesian Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Gatot Abdullah Mansyur said on Monday.
Several people were reported injured after mob set fire to the wood, furniture and other materials at the entrance of consulate office. The illegal workers also tried to jump the wall near the consulate. Some people wanted to burn the building. A consular staff who declined to be named said a woman died in flames.
Indonesian Consulate in Jeddah has full listed of undocumented workers who wanted to meet their deadlines improvement visa to July 3. Workers were angry because the process took too long. According to saudi regulation, undocumented workerwill be threatened to be sentenced to two years in prison and fine of 100 thousand riyals when the amnesty period ended at July 3, 2013.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono keeps updated the current situation there. Presidential Staff for International Relations Teuku Faizasyah said Minister of Foreign Affairs Marty Natalegawa has reported the condition to the President.
