REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono met with President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Taur Matan Ruak, at the State Palace this weekend. Both leaders discussed border area between the two countries.
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Marty Natalegawa said in previous agreement, Timor Leste and Indonesia had approved 97 percent of demarcation line. There were three points called as undissolved segments that still under negotiation.
"Today, one of the three points had been agreed so there are two other segments to be discussed," Natalegawa said on Saturday.
In the past, the boundary line between Indonesia and Timor Lester border was drawn by Dutch East Indies government and Portuguese government as the occupant countries. After Timor Leste separated from Indonesia, both countries must work hard to determine their border including the maritime territories.
Once the border demarcation issue solved, both countries will implementation of a soft border regime to solve some problems. For example, people whose families living separately in both countries can visit each other.
