Police: Chairman is responsible for riot in Papua boxing match

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Police Investigator of Nabire decided Chairman of Committe of Nabire Amateur Boxing Cup as a suspect in an incident in Papua last week. Riot in the final match caused 18 people died and 34 people were injured.

"The suspect with initial name NY, 44 years old. He was Chairman of Committe of boxing championship," Head of Public Information at Public Relation Division of Police Headquarters, Agus Rianto said on Friday.

Although it has been named as a suspect, NY has not been arrested by Police. NY who worked as a civil servant at Education and Training Unit of Nabire was named as a suspect after investigators questiong 16 witnesses.

NY was subjected to 89th Paragraph, 2nd Article and 51th Paragraph, 2nd Article of Law No. 3 of 2005 about National Sport System. He could get five years in prison or a fine five billion IDR.

NY becomes a suspect based on a statement of Indonesian Amateur Boxing Association (Pertina). Representative of Pertina said the boxing match was held without permission and recommendation of Pertina. 

The final boxing match in Nabire between Yulianus Pigome and Alpius Rumkoren. The final match turned into chaos after Rumkoren was declared as the winner. Police suspected that riots sparked as Pigome supporters could not receive the decision.
