REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Deputy Secretary General of Golkar Party who also member of House of Representative, Nurul Arifin, said Indonesia as the largest Muslim country in the world could play an important role to solve crisis in Egypt. Indonesia had experience in democratic transition.
"I expect Indonesia to be a guide for other Muslim countries to drive democracy," Arifin said on Sunday.
Arifin explained Indonesia had proved that democracy and Islam were compatible. Yet, she admitted that Indonesia had different character compared to Egypt. In Indonesia tra transtition process ran smoothly since the military supported the process. On contrary, military in Egypt cannot distance themselves from practical political.
Earlier, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked Indonesian citizens in Egypt to avoid any involvement with the local dynamic. He chose to deliver his message via Twitter instead of official statement.
"To all Indonesian citizens, including students, please avoid dangerous place. Keep maintaining communication with the Embassy and don't involve yourself in conflict," Yudhoyono said in his Twitter account.
