REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Criminologist from University of Indonesia, Mulyana W Kusuma said illegal firearms would disrupt stability if they were at the hand of organized groups.

"Obviously, it will disrupt political stability and security. Police cannot overlook the case of arms trade ," Kusuma said last weekend.

Police must seriously tackle the recent shooting incidents in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. Jakarta is center of politics, government, economy and security barometer. Hence, Kusumah warned that the misuse of weapon potentially disrupted all aspects of life in this state.

Police observer, Bambang Widodo Umar said that there was an increasing demand of firearms trade in black market. These fireamrs are mostly from countries of conflict, such as Afghanistan. Fireamrs are pruchased in those countries then smuggled into Indonesia.

Umar said firearms related case were very dangerous as its only high profiles criminals use them, such as terrorists, drug dealers and robbers. Based on data from Indonesian police, there are 18,030 licensed firearms belong to civilian hands until middle of 2012. The figure consists of 3,060 hand guns, 9,800 rubber weapons and 5,000 gas guns. In same year, Police has confiscated 10,910 firearms without licenses.
