REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Politician of Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) who also the Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) criticized Indonesian leadership today. He said that social economic problems were caused by policy makers who forgot the teachings of Soekarno, the founding father of Indonesia.
"If Soekarno's ideas were consistently implemented, we would not be in this situation, relying on imports," Jokowi said after visiting Republika's office recently.
According to Jokowi, Soekarno taught the nation to be independent in developing our economy and free from foreign dependency. If the concept were implemented, then Indonesia would not suffer from food crisis.
He mentioned, Krakatau Steel factory was the backbone of heavy industries in Indonesia. Through Krakatau Steel, Soekarno estimated Indonesia could produce their own raw materials for national cars, trains and so on.
"We will be a strong country, not just its economic growth," Jokowi said.
Jokowi said government should have concentrated on self-sufficiency of soybean. He believes that Indonesian people can wait five years as long as they can enjoy their Indonesian soybean.
According to some polls, Jokowi is among the most popular candidate for 2014 presidential election.
