REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - A political observer from Airlangga University, Airlangga Pribadi Kusman predicted that internal conflicts in Golkar Party would escalate because of electability of the party’s chairman, Aburizal Bakrie, still low.

"If the conflict continues to escalate, Bakrie's candidacy might be removed from presidential candidacy and also as chairman of Golkar Party," Kusman said recently.

Kusman said his prediction was based on statement of the former the party’s chairman,  Akbar Tandjung. He suggested that Golkar Party should hold a convention if the electability of Bakrie did not improve or still under 10 percent. Tandjung warned that national political development should be observed and see if Bakrie made any improvement in his electability in October or November 2013. 

Kusman said the statement showed that competition was not over yet and would be more open in the future. He said Tandjung had very rational thinking since any figure nominated as presidential candidate from Golkar Party must have high electability.

Kusman said that Bakrie's faction could lose to coalition between Tandjung and Jusuf Kalla who will unite for solidity of Golkar Party. He added that internal dynamics and conflicts in Golkar Party had hardened since Bakrie and his supporters underlined there would be no room for evaluation on his candidacy for president. In contrary, some elites and other figures within the party still see possibility of change.
