REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said conflict required pragmatic rather than dogmatic approach. The approach also must be flexible and far reaching as well as building trust among conflicting parties.
"What did I do with other party since 2000 to 2004 essentially is to build trust," Yudhoyono said while elaborating his experience on resolving conflict in Indonesia.
Yudhoyono believes that every conflict has solution and each conflict has its own characteristic. He explained that different policy strategy approaches applied when he and other elements of government resolved communal conflict in Sampit, Poso and Ambon, also conflict between Indonesia, East Timor and Aceh.
Resolution, reconsilitation and post conflict reintegration requires strong and effective leadership.
Conflict also need to be managed properly. If condition for conflict resolution is not met, the leader must not force any solution, but he must contain the conflict from spreading.
