REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- University of Indonesia (UI) aimed to explore cooperation on developing unmanned vessel (USV) for to help disaster victims in an effort to support Search and Rescue (SAR) operations in National SAR agency (Basarnas).
"The ship, named the Makara-03 is a USV type developed from previous Makara Makara-01 and Makara-02 prototypes," Head of Public Relations Faculty Engineerig UI, Tika Anggraeni, said in Depok campus, Friday (29/11).
He said, Makara-03 was designed specifically to be able to maneuver and rotate quickly. In addition, the design of "planning-hull" that adopts the technology of "axe bow" was applied to Makara-03 to support its ability to carry out the rescue operation.
The unmanned ship designed by UI Student consisting of Naval Architecture students (M Hary Mukti/2009, Aditya Meisar/2009), Mechanical Engineering (Riki/2012), Electrical Engineering (Novika Ginanto/2008, Uli/2010, Irvan JP Elliika/2008) which was supervised by the UI Department of Mechanical Engineering Lecturer Dr Ir Sunaryo MSc.

The concept of unmanned ship was designed to support SAR operations of Basarnas, when the team cannot reach dangerous areas that could threaten the safety of Basarnas team itself in the sea, unmanned ship could be used to perform search operations.
For example, severe weather conditions or shallow water with steep rocks could tear BASARNAS ship, and then the unmanned ship will search for the actual location of the victim before the team reached the location.
"The unmanned vessel will be controlled through satellite communications and could be used to carry out attacks against intruder's boat," he said.
He explained that in order to do its job, the prototype designed with special ability which uncommon to other unmanned ship in general, such as being able to return to its original position when the vessel inverted (self-righting boat).
The vessel also equipped with Lithium Polymer batteries which were arranged systematically with the microcontroller so that the ship can operate in a long duration.
