REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Forestry, Zulkifli Hasan said that board and management of Surabaya Zoo should take responsibility for the deaths of a number of animals in the zoo. There is no change in Surabaya Zoo condition as its assets are not treated well.
"The management must take responsibility," Hasan said on Thursday.
Hasan added that government could not directly take over Surabaya Zoo as it was a regional owned enterprises. The owner also acts as a worker, so that government could not easily to take over.
"We as supervisor will hold a meeting. After that, we will convey it to President," Hasan said.
Ministry of Forestry has called related parties, such as Mayor of Surabaya, Governor of East Java, as well as management and board. This meeting will be held next week.
Another animal was found dead, allegedly due to a lack of monitoring on Wednesday. A six month mountain goat was found dead, having wandered into a cage consisting of a group of deer through a hole in the fence separating the two cages. Dozens of other animals have also been reported dead and the zoo has been deemed the cruelest in the world by foreign media.
