REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KABANJAHE - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono requested debt of Sinabung's victims to be abolished. The point is among four other things requested by the president to ease the victims' hardship during the disaster.
"First, government must deploy the best management for affected districts and the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) ensure the safety of refugees' life," Yudhoyono said recently.
The safety must be government's priority to protect the refugees, the president said. He also asked all stake holders to prevent loss of life.
Yudhoyono also emphasized the importance of sufficient aids to help the refugees including food, clean water, and healthcare. He also asked relocation plan for residents living in radius three kilometers from Mount Sinabung.
Meanwhile, the idea of debt abolition seems quite challenging to be implemented. The president said he has made some calculation, but he wanted some input from North Sumatra governor and Karo regent. While Bank Indonesia (BI) and Financial Services Authority (OJK) said that special requirements are needed before debt abolition.
