Papua special autonomy improves people's welfare

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- Coordinating minister for political, security and legal affairs Djoko Suyanto stated that the draft special autonomy law for Papua and West Papua presented by the government was aimed at improving the people's welfare.

"The draft law is yet to be discussed again by the governor of Papua and the governor of West Papua before being taken to the ministry of home affairs as coordinator for discussion by the ministries concerned," he explained in his address while accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in a meeting with Papuan leadership led by Papua governor Lukas Enembe and West Papua governor Abraham O Ataruri at Istana Bogor, West Java, here on Tuesday.

To speed up development in Papua and West Papua the government has set up an UP4B.

Meanwhile, President Yudhoyono has called for an evaluation of the implementation of the special autonomy so far to check if anymore improvement may be needed in order for its benefit to be felt by the people.

"The President has also asked us to stop armed conflicts that still prevail in Papua," Djoko Suyanto pointed out.

He stated in the meeting that the governors of Papua and West Papua should report the results of the development so far and what still needs to be done with regard to the implementation of special autonomy.

The meeting was also attended by district heads of Papua and West Papua as well as members of the Papuan People's Council (MRP) of Papua and West Papua.

After hearing reports from Minister Djoko Suyanto, the meeting continued behind closed doors with directives from President Yudhoyono.

At the meeting President Yudhoyono was flanked by vice president Boediono, a number of cabinet ministers, national police chief and army chief of staff.
