REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - By 2035, the Indonesia population was expected to increase by 28.6 percent as compared to its population in 2010, National Development Planning Minister Armida Alisjahbana stated while revealing details about the governments population growth projection.

"Based on the projection of the Indonesian population between 2010 and 2035, the number of Indonesian people will increase from 237.6 million to 305.6 million, up by 28.6 percent," the minister explained here on Friday.

According to the forecast, by 2035, Indonesia will be the fifth most populous country after China, India, the United States, and Nigeria. Based on the projection, the West Java province will have the largest population as compared to the other provinces in the country.

In 2010, West Java's population was recorded at 43.2 million, and it is expected to reach 57.1 million by 2035.

West Papua was the least populated province in the year 2010, with a population of 765 thousand. It is forecast to reach 1.3 million by 2035. The minister noted that the data used to make the projection was derived from the results of the 2010 census, in addition to the results obtained from the Indonesian Health and Demography Surveys held in 1994 and 2012.
