REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- The General Election Commission (KPU) in Maluku province has encouraged the local people to vote on Wednesday's legislative elections, according to KPU spokesman Musa Latua Toekan.
"Practice your rights to vote because it is mandatory for all who have the rights to do so. Do not act as non-voters," Toekan stated here on Tuesday.
He noted that the result of the ballots for the elections determine the future of the nation, and the province of Maluku in particular.
According to him, the people who have rights to vote but refuse to do so are irresponsible and lack integrity.
"The people with rights to vote in Maluku are required to vote for whomever they think is the right person to lead this nation," he remarked.
Toekan explained that a total of 1,202,191 voters across Maluku province have been encouraged to come to ballot stations without pressures, on Wednesday to cast their ballots.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has signed a decree declaring Wednesday, April 9, 2014, a public holiday to allow voters to cast their ballots in the legislative elections.
The decree signed on April 3 is based on the decision of the General Elections Commission (KPU) on the date of poll to elect members to the House of Representatives (DPR), the Regional Representative Council (DPD) and the Regional Legislative Council (DPRD), and article 4 sub-article (3) of Law No. 8/2012, the Cabinet Secretariat emphasized on its official website on Sunday.
Earlier, Manpower and Transmigration Minister Muhaimin Iskandar, in his circular signed on March 26, also declared the poll day a holiday for employees/workers.
"By doing so, we hope employees/workers can channel their political aspirations in the five-yearly Fiesta of Democracy," he added.
