REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) continues to examine several names as vice presidential candidates to accompany Joko Widodo (popularly known as Jokowi) in presidential election this year. PDIP's spokesman, Sirait said that the candidates came from politicians, military and professional.
"We do not want this plan becoming elitist issue. It must answer the public needs," Sirait said on Friday as reported by Muhammad Akbar Wijaya.
He explained that there were several important issues in determining PDIP's pair. First, the vice presidential candidate must capable in solving law enforcement problems and corruption eradication.
The party saw three names, Jakarta's deputy governor (Basuki tjahja Purnama), former Constitutional Court chief justice (Mahfud MD) and Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman (Abraham Samad). Second, PDIP saw the need to improve economic condition. Coordinating minister of economic affairs (Hatta Rajasa) was also considered good to be Jokowi's vice presidential candidate.
Third, PDIP also eyed the military, such as TNI commander (Moeldoko), former Army Chief of Staff in era of Megawati Soekarnoputri (Ryamizad Ryacudu) and former Army Chief of Staff (Pramono Edhi Wibowo). The party also eyes former Vice President, Jusuf Kalla as he has a qualified social support base.
