Ministry of Education and Culture launches an open senior high school

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Ministry of Education and Culture introduced the first open senior high school (SMA) devoted for poor student in remote areas.

This open school will be officially launched on Saturday (10/5). Director General of Secondary Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, Ahmad Jazidie said there are five requirements to be a student on this school.

First they come from remote areas. Then the student must came from an economic limitations, has a social problem. Fourth, they has a time limitation because their role to help their family. And last, the important thing is they were above 21 year old.

"The student with those criteria will get highest priority to be a student on open school," said Ahmad on the ceremony in Surabaya, East Java, Monday.

Every student in this school, Ahmad said, will be get a scholarship Rp 1,25 million for a year. Student also gets technological devices such as a tablet for education process.

The education system will be divided into two. Fifty percent through online procedure using tablets and 50 percent with face to face in the school. But despite using an online system, every student must pass the test for national examination (UN) in their school if they want to finish the study.

"So the possibility of the certificates trading or fake certificate is eradicated," he said.

For now, the government has chosen six schools as pioneer for 'parent school'. Those six schools were spread in various cities in Indonesia. The capacity of each school is 200 students. He said that these school was selected because of the gross enrollment rate (APK) of the senior high school in these area were still low.

"The plan is the school will be opened in 10 Mei 2014," he added.
