REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Women have a great influence in environment preservation, stated Head of Indonesia REDD+ Agency Heru Prasetyo in a seminar on "Achieving Gender Equality in REDD+".
REDD+ stands for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation; and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forest and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.
"Women must be involved in forest conservation programs, including REDD+, since women have a great influence on it. It means we must carry out gender equality in REDD+" noted Heru Prasetyo during the seminar on "Achieving Gender Equality in REDD+" here on Tuesday.
According to Heru Prasetyo, the way people preserve their environment depends on how their mother teaches and raises them. He believes that a mother has a great influence on a person's live.
"That is why we need to carry out gender equality in every aspect of life, including education, since a woman is the one who is going to be a mother and be the first one to teach her children about environment preservation," Heru pointed out.
Heru Prasetyo emphasized that the involvement of women in environmental preservation, especially in the REDD+ project, is testament to the fact that REDD+ lays importance on gender equality in implementing the program. He added that equality needs to be seen across landscapes and social groupings.
"Gender is one thing that divides people's abilities and creates boundaries between them. Then it makes it difficult for people to realize their total capacity," Heru affirmed.
On the same occasion, Deputy Minister of Women Empowerment and Child Protection, Heru P. Kasidi, stated that the execution of REDD+ program needed to ensure that women, disabled person, and vulnerable parties are represented at every level and dimension of regulation, strategy, and action related to deforestation.
