Jokowi: Indonesia has a role in South China Sea dispute

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Presidential candidate No. 2, Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo said that Indonesia had an important role in South China Sea dispute between China and several ASEAN countries. According to him, Indonesia can be involved in one condition, this country must have effective strategy to deal with those problems.

"If we believe that we can provide a way out through diplomatic strategy, we will go in. But, if we are not sure, so we do not have to be involved," Jokowi said in third presidential debate on Sunday evening as reported by C87.

Former Solo mayor will keep prioritize the national interests, while in the other hand, Indonesia also wanted to play a role in the region through ideas and solution of existing problems. He assessed that South China Sea dispute did not have a potential conflict for Indonesia.

Jokowi said that South China Sea dispute must be resolved quickly. Indonesia worries about the escalating tensions may turn into conflict in South China Sea, which is a major shipping way and rich in hydrocarbon reserves as well as fisheries.
