REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- East Java Governor Soekarwo symbolically handed over awards to 19 companies on Wednesday in recognition of their best environmental management efforts.

The companies were represented by PT. Pertamina Hulu Energi WMO Gresik, PT. Karya Dibya Mahardika, and PT Ispatindo Sidoarjo.

"In addition, awards were also bestowed on 12 people for their contribution to environmental conservation in East Java," he reported during the inaugural ceremony of the commemoration of the World Environment Day in East Java on Wednesday.

Similar awards were also presented to 117 schools. The awards were symbolically handed over to 36 school principals and 12 village heads, he noted.

"The East Java provincial government and community have always cared about environment. Various environmental conservation efforts have been made along with the public to make East Java beautiful, clean, and well-maintained," he said.

He said children have been taught to conserve the environment by planting trees. The initiative has been fruitful.

"Currently, the forest in East Java covers 42.8 percent of the province's land territory. The area of the forest is larger than that of forests owned by smallholders in Europe," he added.
