REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- Indonesian Health Minister Nafsiah Mboi, Dutch Health, Welfare and Sports Minister Edith Schippers, and Agriculture Minister Sharon Dijksma cochaired a ministerial conference on antimicrobial resistance in The Hague on Wednesday and Thursday.
At the meeting, Minister Mboi led the Indonesian delegation comprising officials from the Health Ministry and the Agriculture Ministry as well as Indonesian Ambassador to the Netherlands Retno Marsudi, released in a statement made by first secretary of educational, social and cultural affairs of the Indonesian embassy in The Hague Danang Waskito to an Antara correspondent in London.
In her address at the two-day meeting, Mboi stated that Indonesia and Dutch had started bilateral cooperation in 2000 in conducting a research on antimicrobial medicines.
The rapid growth of pathogen (bacteria-, virus-, and parasite-causing diseases), which is resistant to antibiotic medicines required common global efforts to curb it, she pointed out.
The minister further underscored the need to expedite and encourage international cooperation in antimicrobial resistance efforts.
She expressed hope that political will could be promoted through the conference.
She also acted as a moderator in an interactive session on the prevention of infection, the use and strategy of antimicrobial medicines, and a session on animal health in relation to human health.
The conference was held by the Dutch government in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with the aim of forging bilateral cooperation with other countries, particularly between the public and private parties and among various sectors to handle antimicrobial resistance.
The outcome of the conference will serve as input to compile action plan on antimicrobial resistance.
The conference was attended by representatives of 30 foreign countries and five international organizations, including WHO, FAO, World Organization of Animal Health, and the World Bank and the European Union.
