REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKANBARU -- About 4.2 million people or 2.2 percent of Indonesia's population are users of narcotics and illicit drugs. Head of National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in Riau, Bambang Setiawan said that they consisted of the first time users, addict users, couriers and drug dealers.
In commemoration of the International Anti-Drug Day, BNN will intensify prevention programs because drug abuse in Indonesia tends to increase significantly, based on national survey.
"The figure of 4.2 million people will continue to grow if we cannot anticipate early and together," Setiawan said.
In the last four years, BNN and Police have revealed about 108,701 cases of drugs crimes with the number of suspects reached 134,117 people. According to him, there are several problems that need attention, especially to recovery drug offenders to get medical and social rehabilitation services in Indonesia.
"We afraid that the drug offenders will turn to be courier or drug dealers because they do not have money to buy drugs.
