REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Vote manipulation and rigging could be categorized as a violation of human rights, Human Rights Commissioner Natalius Pigai stated here on Friday.

"Vote manipulation or rigging is a violation of human rights that will be viewed by the international community as a sign of rising tyrannical regime, which is full of manipulation," he said in a text message.

Pigai, a member of the National Commission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM), noted that the recent presidential election in the country was monitored not only by domestic but also international communities. Pigai believes that the right to vote is an inalienable human right based on the UN Covenant on Civilian and Political Rights.

"Free and fair election is also emphasized in the UN manual on rights and general elections," he pointed out.

Pigai pointed to the fact that Komnas HAM appreciated the implementation of the presidential election in the country on July 9, which had gone smoothly and peacefully without social friction and disharmony between the supporters of the two presidential tickets. He believed that the success was achieved because of the cooperation of all parties, including the military and the police, who have acted as the guardians of internal order and national security.

"Right now, Indonesians are waiting for the national recapitulation of vote tallies by the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the official announcement of the winner of the election on July 22," Pigai added.

The election on July 9 was contested by Prabowo Subianto who paired with Hatta Rajasa and Joko "Jokowi" Widodo with Jusuf "JK" Kalla as his running mate. Based on the quick vote count jointly carried out by Perum LKBN Antara and LPP RRI until 1:45 p.m., on Friday, the Jokowi-JK pair won the election. Of the 99.15 percent counted votes, the Jokowi-JK ticket won 52.52 percent of the votes while the Prabowo-Hatta duo got 47.48 percent.
