REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The police of East Java arrested some suspects who allegedly ran a women trafficking syndicate through Blackberry Messenger (BBM) messaging service, which employed women in the age group of 25 to 30 years as prostitutes.

"The case was revealed on July 16 in a five star hotel in Surabaya, and the officers have arrested three suspects with the initials GCA, IN, and MH," spokesperson of East Java Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Aziza Hani MM stated in his office here on Friday.

Hani, accompanied by the chief of Crime and Investigation Directorate of East Java Police, explained that the arrested suspects have no connection with the two suspects, NF and AT, 15- to 17-year-old members of a student trafficking syndicate, having a similar modus operandi using BBM service, previously revealed on June 10.

"NF and AT employ 40 youth in a BBM group, while GCA, IN, and MH have only 20 employees. For further details, GCA has 3 members, IN has 5, and MH has 12," Hani revealed.

The customers contacted GCA, the pimp, and then the suspect called the middle man with the initial L to get the prostitute.

During the transaction, GCA set a tariff for every deal. After a deal was finalized, GCA then ordered the costumer to provide a hotel room where GCA can bring the prostitute.

Seventy percent of the tariff went to the woman and 30 percent to the suspect who acted as the coordinator.

The police have confiscated Rp4 million worth of cash, five cellphones, and 10 boxes of condoms of various brands and one used condom.

The suspects violated articles 296 and 506 of the Criminal Law, which carry an imprisonment penalty of a year or a year and four months, Hani stated.

Meanwhile, NF and AT, who were involved in trafficking youth, violated Law No.21/2007, article 17, juncto 2, on Human Trafficking, which carries an imprisonment sentence of 3 to 15 years and Rp120 million-Rp600 million worth of fine and are also guilty of violating articles 296 and 506 of the Criminal Law.
