REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MERAK - The homebound traffic in Java is predicted to peak on Friday. Millions of travelers heading to Sumatra through Merak port, Banten. Public relation of state owned seaport operator PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, Mario S Utomo said that traffic during Eid al Fitr could reach one million people.
"At peak season, number of travelers will be far higher than usual. For example, number of motorcycles can increase from 700 units in normal days to 20 thousand units," Utomo said recently.
The increase will also occur in other transportation system. Number of cars, that will cross the Sunda Strait through the Merak port increase from1,500 units to 2,500 units per day, while number of buses increase from 250-300 units to 800 units per day.
ASDP Ferry is ready to serve travelers from Merak port to Bakauheni port in Lampung. Company prepared 28 additional roll-on roll-off (roro) ferries that will operate every day to anticipate an influx of returning Eid al Fitr travelers. Last week, transportation services from Merak in Java to Bakauheni in Sumatra were operating at normal capacity, with no increase in passenger numbers.
