REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- The law and order situation in Timika and its surrounding areas has spiraled out of control following the killing of five people by a community group.
On Wednesday, the data collected from Jayapura revealed that a community group retaliated after Korea Waker's bodies had been found in SP 6 Timika region, which led to the killing of five people and injuries to two others.
A villager's house located at SP 6 was also set ablaze on Tuesday (Aug 12) at around 2:30 p.m. local time, after the owner of the house was injured and killed.
The names of the five deceased are Mu Said (70), Muh. Agung Kulaken (27), Noris Timang, Indra Afriadi Saputra (14), and Arfi Duran (36).
The two victims who suffered injuries were Saiful (35) and Ahmad Rumra (48).
Papua Police Deputy Chief Brigadier General Paulus Waterpauw remarked that he regretted the violence committed by the community group.
"The situation cannot be allowed to go out of control. Thus, the police will take persuasive steps for providing security to all people especially to those who live in Timika," he noted.
He stated that the Papua Police will deploy one company of Mobile Brigade (Brimob) to anticipate any possible disruption.
"We will also engage with the victim's family so that there is no retaliation," he added.
Earlier, the Jayapura Resort Police had arrested 21 members of Free National Soldiers in West Papua on Sunday, (August 10), after the separatists held an inauguration ceremony in Beraf Village, Nimbokrang area of Jayapura District, Papua Province.
Deputy Chief of Papua Regional Police Brigadier General Paulus Waterpauw informed Antara here on Monday that the members were arrested when they were crossing Warombaim village using a truck.
The police revealed that there were 60 members on the truck.
According to the police, two foreigners were also among the members who had attended the inauguration ceremony led by Terrianus Sato on Saturday (August 9). Waterpauw added that the members had been waving the Bintang Kejora flag during the ceremony.
"The foreigners have not yet been identified," Waterpauw noted.
