REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, AMBON -- The number of people living in poverty in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku had dropped to 315,990 in March 2014 from 316,110 in the same month last year.
"In March 2013, the number of poor people in Maluku had reached 315,990 or 19.49 percent of the total population. The figure fell to 316,110 or 19.13 percent in March 2014," Chief of the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) office in Maluku Diah Utami reported here on Monday.
Compared to March 2013, the number of poor people fell 0.36 points in the same month this year although the number of poor people had increased to 120, she said.
"When compared with September 2013, the poverty rate had fallen 0.14 percent," she added.
From March 2013 to March 2014, the number of poor people living in rural areas fell to 1,840 and in urban areas increased to 1,970.
