REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The government needs to pay attention to investment in mass transportation, which is not only efficient but environment-friendly as well, said a researcher.
"Besides, the government should also consider applying age restrictions on motor vehicles so as to improve the declining air quality," Hudori, an observer at the Yogyakarta Indonesian Islamic University, said here on Wednesday.
According to him, the colleges in the country should also be asked to diligently carry out research and innovations that could improve the quality of the environment.
"The outcome of the studies can be a valuable source for the government when they frame environmental policies," he said.
Hudori noted that the impact of the poor quality of air might not be felt now, but it will show its effects in the future.
"If the matter is not addressed diligently, it will increase the burden of health cost and decrease the economic productivity," he noted.
Further, he added, the phenomenon of air pollution in many cities in Indonesia has different characteristics.
For example, in the city of Yogyakarta, air pollution is caused by a high vehicular traffic, but the industrial activity in the city is not too dominant.
