REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Political observer, Heru Budianto said that Democrat Party (PD) maneuver after walking out in plenary meeting on local head election through Regional House of Representative would strengthen the Red and White Coalition led by Prabowo Subianto.
"This maneuver was seen many times after Benny K Harman (Democratic Party representative) expressed his proposal of direct election with 10 additional requirements. It was rejected then Democratic Party decided to walk out," Budianto said on Friday.
Democratic Party action gave a fresh opportunity to Red and White Coalition that supported indirect election. The coalition then won the voting in plenary meeting about election bill. Democratic Party initially proposed 10 requirements of direct election, but it was not accommodated by House of Representatives deputy speaker, Priyo Budi Santoso.
Member of Democratic Party's Board of Trustees, Ahmad Mubarok explained that PDIP was not serious about the party's 10 requirements. Because of the 10 proposed requirements are not included in the legislation, the party decided to walk out.
In a plenary meeting on Thursday evening, the final result of votes from the camp supporting direct elections only totaled 135, consisted of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), National Awakening Party (PKB) and Hanura Party. The figure was far fewer than the 226 votes given by the camp supporting indirect elections, consisted of Golkar Party, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), National Mandate Party (PAN), United Development Party (PPP) and Gerindra Party.
