REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PEKALONGAN - Vice President Boediono said that batik not only had cultural value but also economic value, especially for small industries. Boediono said while giving a speech in the Archipelago Batik Week 2014 in Pekalongan, Central Java on Wednesday.

"We agree that batik has cultural value, but it must have economic value according to public taste," Boediono said.

Batik has been recognized by UNESCO as one of cultural heritages from Indonesia. Public should be able to combine the art of batik with its economic value to provide benefits to national economy. We have wide spaces to develop batik creation supported by central and local government.

All communities currently love to wear batik. According to Boediono, we need to improve the technology of making batik to increase its quality. Batik industry is not only controlled by larger manufacturers that can eliminate the micro small and medium enterprises, which have been active in this business from long time ago.

Indonesian batik artisans also have been able to combine various batik motives from Solo, Yogyakarta, Chinese and Arabic and resulted unique motives.
