REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Elections Organizers' Honorary Council (DKPP) Jimly Asshiddiqie said President-elect Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, will not be impeached.
"I think, what is being raised as a discourse among the public is only the dynamics that is taking place along with the elections of the leaders of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR), the House of Representatives (DPR) and the Regional Representatives Council (DPD). The discourse on the impeachment has no legal basis," Jimly said while congratulating elected MPR Chairman Zulkifli Hasan here on Thursday.
He expressed conviction that the inauguration of President-elect and Vice-President-elect on October 20 will not face any problem. No one will disturb such an official state event, he stated.
Jimly, who is also a former Constitutional Court Chairman, admitted that impeachment had a legal basis but was regulated through tight requirements, such as the support of the DPR and MPR. After all, it has to be submitted to the Constitutional Court along with strong evidence.
"There can be no impeachment. Impeachment in this country will be far more difficult than that in the United States. In the United States, impeachment has taken place only thrice so far," he added.
