REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Property Watch has questioned the government's commitment to housing sector development following the merger of the public housing ministry and public works ministry.

"The commitment to develop public housing will never succeed if the public housing ministry is merged with the public works ministry," Indonesian Property Watch Executive Director Ali Tranghanda stated in a press statement released on Tuesday.

Ali said understanding the issue of public housing was not easy because it was connected to housing market structure, in which demand was not in keeping with supply. With the merger of the two ministries, he feared the concepts of housing market developed by housing experts and observers would not work well.

"How can the government handle public housing when no ministry focuses on developing it. The concept of land bank and home savings, which should become excellent programs to meet the public demand for homes, will not work," he noted.

Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono stressed on Monday that the merger of the two ministries would not affect the government's performance.

"We have no problem as the public housing ministry was once merged with the public works ministry," he added.
