REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Minister of Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi pledged that her ministry would improve the quality of protection provided to Indonesian citizens residing in foreign countries.

"It is obligation of the government to protect Indonesian people. So we will provide better quality of service and increased protection to Indonesians living abroad," Marsudi stated during her first press briefing as minister on Wednesday.

According to the minister, government will provide protections through systems of prevention, early detection and provision of rapid and appropriate protection.

"The ministry will repatriate Indonesians from conflict areas and establish moratorium policies for migrant workers who want to enter the areas. We will also conduct bilateral and regional negotiations with regard to the placement and protection of migrant workers," Marsudi affirmed.

She further added that the Ministry could not protect Indonesian people abroad by alone, but it also needed to cooperate and coordinate with other related ministries to handle issues related to migrant workers and the protection of people living abroad.

Moreover, the minister also pointed out that Indonesia would increase cooperation in politics, mitigation of terrorism and global epidemics, and the prevention of the smuggling of people in Southeast Asia.

"Indonesia will put in its best efforts to remain a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council in the 2019-2020 period," she said.
