REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The European Union (EU) and its member states provide at least 1,800 scholarships every year to Indonesian students to study at universities in Europe.

"The EU continues to support quality education. We want all young Indonesians to gain the knowledge and skills that will empower them to become active members of evolving societies," EU Ambassador to Indonesia Olof Skoog said recently.

Skoog added that to share more information on the scholarships schemes, the EU will host the European Higher Education Fair (EHEF) in Jakarta (Nov 8-9); Surabaya, East Java (Nov 11); and Makassar, South Sulawesi (Nov 13).

"The EHEF has been organized in response to the growing interest among Indonesian students to pursue higher education in Europe," he noted.

This year, around 4,000 Indonesian students have chosen Europe to pursue their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. More than 7,000 Indonesians are currently studying at various European universities, he remarked.

The number of Indonesian students studying in Europe tends to increase. In 2013, for instance, the number rose by 20 percent compared to 2012, he noted.

Europe has more than 4,000 universities, including the ones classified by various world university ranking agencies as world class, such as ETH Zurich, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, ENS Paris, Ecole Polytechnique, the University of Copenhagen and Ruprecht-Karls-Universiat Heidelberg.
