REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Japan's Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia Yusuke Shindo stated that Indo esia needed capacity building as an integral factor to develop its marine sector.
"Apart from improving the seaports, for instance, we believe that improving the capability of its human resources is important for Indonesia to develop its marine sector," Shindo pointed out on Thursday.
The deputy ambassador lauded the new Indonesian government's decision to focus on the development of its marine sector.
"Indonesia has abundant resources in its marine sector. Japan is also a maritime country. We have the experience, technology, and financial capability to assist Indonesia in developing its marine sector. We are looking forward to developing future cooperation with Indonesia in this sector," Shindo remarked.
Chairman of the Steering Committee of the Jakarta-Japan Club Taro Takada expressed hope that a well-developed marine sector in Indonesia will boost efficiency in the nationwide distribution of goods.
Earlier, a marine and fishery professor from the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) Rochmin Dahuri said Indonesia has the largest marine economic potential in the world.
"Indonesia's yearly marine sustained yield is 1.2 billion USD. It has the potential to create 40 million jobs or cater to one-third of the country's workforce," Rochmin claimed.
"If we tap this potential, Indonesian workers do not have to look for jobs abroad," he emphasized.
