REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo agrees with the idea of Minister of Maritime and Fishery Affairs Susi Pudjiastuti to drown illegal fishing vessels entering Indonesian waters.

"We don't have to detain those vessels, but just drown them after we evacuate their people first," Jokowi said on Tuesday, November 18.

Illegal fishing is a main problem in marine and fishery sectors in Indonesia. Jokowi said that Minister Susi had reported him on illegal fishing which inflict heavy losses up to 300 trillion IDR for Indonesia.

Government has caught at least four illegal vessels in Indonesian waters. With the current policy, the illegal vessels are taken to port. While waiting the legal process, the vessels must stay in the port. However, it hampers traditional fishers’ activity as the illegal vessels are piling up in the ports. Legal process takes at least six months.
