REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Tax revenue is likely to fall short of the government's target for this financial year, says Minister of Finance Bambang Brodjonegoro. Indonesia collected only 812 trillion IDR or 75 percent of its 2014 tax revenue target as of November 14, 2014.
"We only have 1.5 months to go. We will not reach the target, but we will try harder," Minister Brodjonegoro said before President Joko Widodo in State Palace, Thursday, November 20.
As of November 14, the country collected only 812 trillion IDR. Income tax and value-added tax contribute to 57 percent and 40 percent of total tax.
Brodjonegoro admitted that the biggest issue in tax is missing the target. Within the last 10 years, from 2002-2012, Indonesia can only reach tax revenue target in 2004 and 2008. Poor awareness among tax payers is the main reason behind the failure.
Meanwhile, excise revenue, the third largest country's income, will reach the target. Tobacco and alcohol contribute highest. Government targets tobacco and alcohol excise revenue to reach 111 trillion IDR and 6 trillion IDR.
