REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice-President Jusuf Kalla said mutual maritime cooperation between countries can ensure their welfare.
"The region can reap the benefits of mutual cooperation in the maritime sector," the Vice-President stated while delivering the keynote speech at the Public Forum Maritime Cooperation in East Asia here on Tuesday (2/12).
Other speakers included former Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda, former Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Rokhmin Dahuri, Sea Law Expert Hasjim Djalal and Executive Director of Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) Rizal Sukma.
The forum was also attended by Chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC) Surakiart Sathirathai, former President of Timor Leste Jose Ramos Horta, former Prime Minister of Malaysia Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and former Chancellor of Austria Alfred Gusenbauer.
Kalla noted that conflicts in oceans are mainly for marine resources. Thus, economic cooperation in the maritime sector can prevent any possible conflict.
The Vice-President expressed hope that the forum will address various problems and offer ideas and solutions for mutual maritime cooperation and ensure prosperity in the region, especially South East Asia.
"I hope this forum will come up with a lot of solutions for our good," he added.
