Indonesia supports disarmament for global peace

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- Indonesia fully supports the disarmament and non-proliferation of all weapons of mass destruction to ensure world peace and security, stated an Indonesian delegation.

The Indonesian delegation made the statement at the 19th Session of the Conference of the States Parties to Review the Operation of the Chemical Weapons Convention held in The Hague from December 1 to 5, the third secretary of the Indonesian embassy in The Hague, Dumas Amali Radityo, said in a press statement released on Friday.

The Indonesian delegation is led by the embassy's ad interim charge d'affaires/deputy chief of mission Ibnu Wahyutomo, who is also a permanent representative to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.

As part of the efforts to achieve the most effective instrument in the disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Indonesia fully supports any effort to promote the universality of the convention, the statement said.

Indonesia reiterated the importance of applying several main provisions in the Chemical Weapons Convention with regard to the development of economy and technology, assistance for protection against chemical weapons to promote chemical technology and trade for peace purpose, and to thwart any possible use and threat of chemical weapons.

According to the statement, Indonesia has so far organized several workshops and seminars for promoting chemical safety and security as part of its effort to contribute to the objectives of the convention.
