Minister to close ASEAN University Games

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Youth and Sports Affairs Minister Imam Nahrowi is scheduled to close the 17th ASEAN University Games (POM ASIAN) at Sriwijaya Sports Stadium here on Sunday evening.

"The POM ASEAN which was opened here on December 10 and will be closed this evening, is participated in by 11 countries to compete in 20 sport branches," Ahmad Najib, an assistant officer for people welfare affairs of the South Sumatra Provincial Government, said here on Sunday.

Besides the minister, the closing ceremony, which will be enlivened with local and national dances, will also be attended by a number of university rectors, he said.

During the function, Indonesia will hand over the POM ASEAN flag to Singapore which will host the next games.

The audience will be entertained with singers from Jakarta and Solo who will among others present 'dangdut' songs.

Until Saturday night, Indonesian took over Thailand's position as the provisional medal tally leader of the 17th ASEAN University Games, after winning several sports in the last two days.

Up to Friday, Thailand still led the provisional medal tally, according to data issued by the POM ASEAN information center on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the contingent of Brunei Darussalam had not yet won any event of the 20 sports branches.

The host, Indonesian team, up to Saturday had grabbed 57 gold, 68 silver and 43 bronze medals, while Thailand came in the second position with 50 gold, 31 silver, 20 bronze medals.

In addition, Malaysia has collected 32 gold, 35 silver, 46 bronze medals.

A total of 20 sports---football, sepak takraw, volleyball, wushu, taekwondo, karate, chess, tennis, archery, table tennis, beach volleyball, badminton, futsal, athletics, swimming, fencing, martial arts, diving, basketball, and pentaque---were contested in by participating athletes," a spokesman for POM ASEAN, Asdit Abdullah, said earlier.

The event was opened by Vice President Jusuf Kalla on Wednesday night (December 10) in the South Sumatra provincial capital city of Palembang.

Dan mereka (Ahli Kitab) tidak berpecah belah kecuali setelah datang kepada mereka ilmu (kebenaran yang disampaikan oleh para nabi) karena kedengkian antara sesama mereka. Jika tidaklah karena suatu ketetapan yang telah ada dahulunya dari Tuhanmu (untuk menangguhkan azab) sampai batas waktu yang ditentukan, pastilah hukuman bagi mereka telah dilaksanakan. Dan sesungguhnya orang-orang yang mewarisi Kitab (Taurat dan Injil) setelah mereka (pada zaman Muhammad), benar-benar berada dalam keraguan yang mendalam tentang Kitab (Al-Qur'an) itu.
