Jokowi meets Islamic figures to discuss death sentence

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo meets General Chairman of the Executive Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Said Aqil Siradj to discuss death penalty in Indonesia. Some vioced concern over the death sentence in Indonesia.

"We are discussing several matters related to death sentence in drug-related case. I asked for NU's view," Jokowi said after meeting Said Aqil Siradj in NU Headquarter on Wednesday, December 24.

Earlier, President Jokowi rejected giving clemency to 64 drug dealers sentenced to death. The move raised concern from Amnesty International which asked Jokowi to suspend the sentence.

Secretary General of NU, Marsudi Syuhud, said the ulamas welcome Jokowi despite the visit was on  short notice. General Treasury of NU, Bina Suhendra, said that NU gave Jokowi several advises.

"We support his pro-citizen policy. We also asked him to give maximum sentence to drug offenses," he said.
