REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Minister of Transportation Ignatius Jonan scolded one of Indonesian Directors of AirAsia after the budget airline was reported ignoring weather report on the day that AirAsia flight QZ8501 crashed.
Jonan visited AirAsia office in Soekarno-Hatta Airport on Friday, January 2. He asked the Director of AirAsia on how they got the weather report.
"Why did you take weather report after the plane flew last Sunday?" Jonan asked the director. "Everyone must obey the rule. I can revoke your license if you try to go against the rule," Jonan said.
Earlier, Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG) reported that AirAsia never took weather report for flight from Juanda Airport, Surabaya.
"We thought that it was only on last Sunday that AirAsia did not take weather report. It turns out that they never take it," The Head of Information and Data Center at Juanda BMKG, Bambang Setiajid, said.
International regulation and the Ministry of Transportation oblige all flight crew, especially pilot, to be aware of weather report and weather forecast.
A member of Commission V at the House of Representatives, Abdul Hakim, said parliament would form working board to probe every stakeholder in aviation. "We want to ensure that everyone here follows all procedures," he said.
Parliament will find out whether AirAsia never takes weather report or takes it from other sources, such as internet. "If we find out that they break the rule, we will impose sanction," he said.
